A former Atlanta Braves pitcher who retired to become a police officer was killed in an automobile accident on Sunday, September 11th 2022 .

Anthony Varvaro completed the police academy at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2016.

The 37-year-old spent four of his six major league seasons with the Braves. He was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the twelfth round of the 2005 MLB draft and has played for the Boston Red Sox.

Varvaro married the love of his life Kerry Thomson in 2011. The couple are blessed with four children.

Varvarowas inducted into the 2019 class of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame, which he was a part of.

On the morning of September 11, 2022, Varvaro was killed in a head-on accident with a wrong-way vehicle in Jersey City, New Jersey, near the Holland Tunnel.

When the tragedy occurred, he was on his way to honor those who perished in the September 11 attacks by volunteering at the World Trade Center Command.

The Braves expressed their sadness over the loss of former pitcher Anthony Varvaro in a series of tweets.

They said the accident occurred while he was on his way to work at World Trade Center Command for a 9/11-related event.
