A man has died after he was attacked by his own dog at his Tasmanian home.
Police and emergency services responded to a dog attack on a man and a woman in their 60s at their Allens Rivulet home about 10.40pm on Sunday.
The 66-year-old man was found dead at the scene after he suffered serious injuries to his lower legs from the attack.
Tasmanian Police Inspector Colin Riley said the attack was being investigated, but wouldn’t say what breed the dog was.
“This incident is very rare and this is obviously a family who had a loved pet and unfortunately that animal has turned on them,” he said.
The 64-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her lower limbs and was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones at this difficult time,” Inspector Riley said.
The dog was euthanised at the scene by an animal management officer from the local council.
Inspector Riley said he such an attack was unusual.
“A significant injury like this, where it leaves one person deceased and other person hospital is very rare in Tasmania,” Inspector Riley said.
“To be honest, I can’t recall the last time something like this occurred.”
Gary Arnold, general manager at the local Kingborough Council, said “initial indications” showed the dog was not registered but they were checking council records.
Inspector Riley said a detailed report would be prepared for the coroner.
